The last election in Gaza was in 2006. Most of the population wasn't even old enough to vote yet when it happened. They are *also* oppressed. In administrative detention, a person is held without trial without having committed an offense, on the grounds that he or she plans to break the law in the future. As this measure is supposed to be preventive, it has no time limit.
The person is detained without legal proceedings, by order of the regional military commander, based on classified evidence that is not revealed to them. This leaves the detainees helpless – facing unknown allegations with no way to disprove them, not knowing when they will be released, and without being charged, tried or convicted.
Even beyond administrative detention, when charges are brought against Palestinians in the West Bank, they are almost always tried in military courts that have a near-perfect conviction rate. (By contrast, Israelis are usually tried in civil court.) Palestinians, in other words, are sent to a trapdoor instead of a fair trial.
“The power to incarcerate people who have not been convicted or even charged with anything for lengthy periods of time, based on secret ‘evidence’ that they cannot challenge, is an extreme power,” noted Israeli human rights group B’Tselem. “Israel uses it continuously and extensively, routinely holding hundreds of Palestinians at any given moment.”
Israeli soldiers subjected Palestinian detainees to electric shocks, burned their skin with lighters, spat in their mouths, and deprived them of sleep, food, and access to bathrooms until they defecated on themselves. Many were tied to a fence for hours, handcuffed, and blindfolded for most of the day. Some testified to having been beaten all over their bodies and having cigarettes extinguished on their necks or backs. Several people are known to have died as a result of being held in these conditions.

Open Letter to the ICJ Urgent Appeal for Provisional Measure to Prevent Genocide in Gaza on Behalf of Bosnian Genocide Survivors
As survivors of the genocide and war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we urgently appeal to you to implement necessary provisional measures swiftly to protect Palestinians in Gaza. The unfolding atrocities since October 7th demand immediate action to prevent further loss of life, injuries, and human suffering. We are deeply troubled by the apparent impunity of the State of Israel for these crimes, reminiscent of the tragic circumstances we endured during the Bosnian war and genocide.
The international community's failure to protect us during the Bosnian Genocide remains a stark chapter in history. We, firsthand, experienced the consequences of a lack of decisive action. Today, as we bear witness to the horrors in Gaza, we implore the Court not to repeat this grievous mistake.
Tayab Ali, the head of international law at Bindmans, said the significance of the UK’s submission on Myanmar “lay in showing the importance the UK attaches to adherence to the [UN] Genocide Convention and in showing the UK took a wide, and not a narrow, definition of acts of genocide, and the intent to commit genocide. It also made clear that the court should take into account risks to life after a ceasefire caused by disabilities, inability to reside in their homes and wider injustices.
“It would be wholly disingenuous if the UK, six week after advancing such a significant and broad definition of genocide in the case of Myanmar, now adopts a narrow one in the case of Israel.”
South Africa is likely to highlight the UK’s arguments about Myanmar, submitted in conjunction with Canada, Germany, Denmark, France and the Netherlands, when it makes its high-stakes accusation of genocide against Israel.
The concentration of defenceless civilians in areas designated and delimited on a map as protected, can be used and exploited by the actors on the battlefield to manage and direct their use of lethal force.
This was the case in Bosnia, with the infamous Srebrenica “safe zone”. The area was instituted by the United Nations in 1993 in order to protect Bosnian Muslims under attack, but the disarmament of the safe zone transformed it into easy prey for Serb forces. They first obstructed the delivery of humanitarian aid to the area and then rounded up and massacred thousands of Muslim civilians.
Safe areas became lethal also in the case of Sri Lanka, where the government imposed the creation of Tamil safety zones in which it killed thousands of civilians, while blaming the Tamil Tigers for allegedly using the refugees concentrated in the safe zones as “human shields”.
Similarly, in Gaza, Israel is imposing unilaterally what and where is “safe” for Palestinian civilians. In doing so, it is deploying the discourse of safety and its associated legal technologies – warnings, safe zones, safe corridors, evacuation grids – as a lethal tool to implement the ethnic cleansing of different areas of the territory designated as safe/unsafe.
Areas or parts of the territories defined as safe serve to concentrate the displaced population and better manage the military operations and the killing of civilians. As one poignant Reuters headline put it: “Israel orders Gazans to flee, bombs where it sends them”.
President Joe Biden publicly acknowledged that Israel was losing international legitimacy for what he called its “indiscriminate bombing.”
That includes tens of thousands of homes as well as schools, hospitals, mosques and stores. U.N. monitors have said that about 70% of school buildings across Gaza have been damaged. At least 56 damaged schools served as shelters for displaced civilians. Israeli strikes damaged 110 mosques and three churches,
Between 1942 and 1945, the allies attacked 51 major German cities and towns, destroying about 40-50% of their urban areas, Robert Pape, a U.S. military historian said this amounted to 10% of buildings across Germany, compared to over 33% across Gaza, a densely populated territory of just 140 square miles (360 square kilometers).
“Gaza is one of the most intense civilian punishment campaigns in history,” said Pape.
Israel has explained what it’s doing in plain language. No one can claim they didn’t know. The food system in Gaza has collapsed completely. The health system has collapsed. Basic infrastructure for clean water and sanitation has collapsed. According to the Famine Review Committee, the people of Gaza are facing a real prospect of famine: without immediate action, mass mortality from hunger or disease outbreaks is looming. The FRC delivers its assessments to a group of international relief agencies operating an early warning system known as the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
Famine has arrived with unprecedented speed, as Israel has laid total siege to the enclave for more than three months and carried out a massive bombing campaign that has destroyed much of the infrastructure needed to sustain life.
The deliberate starvation of civilians is a war crime, and the allegation that Israel is creating the risk of death from starvation in Gaza is central to the case being brought by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) accusing Israel of genocide.

You leave us with a worthy question, but ignore that Palestine already answered it by supporting Hamas. And to pretend that Hamas doesn't have majority support, even by moderate Muslims, is incorrect. Hamas is their answer. And Hamas wants not only to resist...but to exterminate. To ignore this is to doom the Jews in that region. The real answer that those of us outside of that region can hope for is that Hamas be eliminated from the picture so that real change can happen without fear of a Jewish extermination.

The etymological argument is also mistaken: "antisemitism" began in response to 19th C. false racialist theorizing about "Semitic races," but has been used overwhelmingly in the context of Jews. It is also thanks to Arab antisemitism (along with Iranian antisemitism and perhaps some other Asian and African varieties) that Mizrahi Jews are the largest component of the Jewish population in Israel.

Antisemitism may be a strength of the ADL. I see that their income is increasing and the CEO is taking a large salary. But since the vast majority of their income is from contributions, that's money out of the contributors' pockets, which doesn't strengthen them. The concentration of defenceless civilians in areas designated and delimited on a map as protected, can be used and exploited by the actors on the battlefield to manage and direct their use of lethal force.
This was the case in Bosnia, with the infamous Srebrenica “safe zone”. The area was instituted by the United Nations in 1993 in order to protect Bosnian Muslims under attack, but the disarmament of the safe zone transformed it into easy prey for Serb forces. They first obstructed the delivery of humanitarian aid to the area and then rounded up and massacred thousands of Muslim civilians.
Safe areas became lethal also in the case of Sri Lanka, where the government imposed the creation of Tamil safety zones in which it killed thousands of civilians, while blaming the Tamil Tigers for allegedly using the refugees concentrated in the safe zones as “human shields”.
Similarly, in Gaza, Israel is imposing unilaterally what and where is “safe” for Palestinian civilians. In doing so, it is deploying the discourse of safety and its associated legal technologies – warnings, safe zones, safe corridors, evacuation grids – as a lethal tool to implement the ethnic cleansing of different areas of the territory designated as safe/unsafe.
Areas or parts of the territories defined as safe serve to concentrate the displaced population and better manage the military operations and the killing of civilians. As one poignant Reuters headline put it: “Israel orders Gazans to flee, bombs where it sends them”.

“2.2 million Palestinian have died from violence, 0.1 million, or from imposed deprivation, 2.1 million, since the British invasion of the Ottoman Empire in 1914 in WW1. The details are set out below in a 2019 update on the ongoing Palestinian Genocide [1].
In 1880 there were about 500,000 Arab Palestinians and about 25,000 Jews living in Palestine of whom half were immigrants [2, 3]. The land of Palestine has now been 90% ethnically cleansed [1, 4-7]. While Indigenous Palestinians represent 50% of Apartheid Israeli subjects, nearly three quarters cannot vote for the government ruling them - egregious Apartheid that is declared by the UN to be a crime against Humanity [11].”

That last statement, among others, is false. As a Jew, and having experienced antisemitism in the USA in my youth, I would certainly prefer that antisemitism be over. There are also many Jews in Israel who have been working toward peace with Palestinians. The etymological argument is also mistaken: "antisemitism" began in response to 19th C. false racialist theorizing about "Semitic races," but has been used overwhelmingly in the context of Jews. It is also thanks to Arab antisemitism (along with Iranian antisemitism and perhaps some other Asian and African varieties) that Mizrahi Jews are the largest component of the Jewish population in Israel.
If you wonder why Jewish people get alarmed or angered by remarks like yours, it is because those remarks direct their anger at Jews generally, rather than at the Israeli government and military. I live in Japan, I have never visited Israel, I am very angered by the present government, I feel deeply saddened by the suffering inflicted on both those in Gaza and on the victoms of Hamas and their families. I have had many Arab students in my university classes, and some have been among my best; we manage to see each other as individuals. Antisemitism may be a strength of the ADL. I see that their income is increasing and the CEO is taking a large salary. But since the vast majority of their income is from contributions, that's money out of the contributors' pockets, which doesn't strengthen them. If anything, the rise in contributions comes from a greater perception of a threat. The Trump years were not helpful in that regard. That many religious Jews supported Trump was simply ignorant and foolish.
You may rationalize that antisemitism is good for the Jews, but in fact that reasoning is really twisted. What's next: claiming that to be antisemitic is philosemitic? No harm done, etc.?
