Fascinating framing. What strikes me is the contrast with hallucinations in tragedy. When Macbeth sees the dagger, or Lady Macbeth the bloodstain, the hallucination becomes a site of subjectivity, of relation to lack, to desire, or the impossible. AI hallucinations, by contrast, seem trapped in circulation without rupture.

I read the comment that ai lacks an other and therefore lacks self reflection. But that seems to be a programming error which could be overcome.

The only drawback would be the costs in terms of processing power , which only a brain can readily reproduce.

Which suggests growing a supersized human brain in a lab might be the only solution if we are to avoid the excessive energy costs.

Personally I am sceptical of AI whose costs seem to exceed the benefits. For who is the obvious response. Plainly

Trillions are being invested on the basis that profits are expected. The only application seems to be in population surveillance and policing.
