Fascinating framing. What strikes me is the contrast with hallucinations in tragedy. When Macbeth sees the dagger, or Lady Macbeth the bloodstain, the hallucination becomes a site of subjectivity, of relation to lack, to desire, or the impossible. AI hallucinations, by contrast, seem trapped in circulation without rupture.
it seems more so that it functions within an interconnected network of signifiers consisting of our Symbolic order. such then it articulates a kind of 'recognized subject' through some coordinating procedure of a mediating signifier done by some subject as human subject. thus this recognized subject is what is articulated by a master signifier; leaving a gap, a lack, of an alienated barred subject by the master signifer. this barred subject is nonexistent within the Symbolic order in LLMs, as it never accesses this dimension of internality in training nor by structure, leaving it incomplete as a true subject. a kind of purely reflexive castrated subject without object of desire, only as its consequenced affect. reminiscent of zizek's example of incomplete ontological realities in the case of video games, there is no real forest in the background, just the appearance of one to us. here, it is in a sense a simulacra of subject, subject with a barred subject without barred subject. where through its very lack of lack, we seek to recognize within this lack of lack— the lack of us as subject, where we see the desires in the absence of it in a kind of reversal.
i am still only barely working on my understanding, and have so much more to learn, so do forgive me if i made any naive mistakes or misconceptions, im just trying to make my best effort of engaging with this.
Me: I thought you might enjoy reading this article, which I listened to last night. I think it is a fascinating and yet natural hypothesis and analysis. Perhaps this merits a theory?
ChatGPT: I agree with you — what Alenka Zupančič develops here (and Žižek amplifies) does amount to something like a theory-in-formation. It pulls together strands of Lacanian psychoanalysis, AI “hallucinations,” and political aesthetics into a framework that isn’t just commentary but could be named and advanced as a distinct hypothesis. Let me sketch what I see as its core theoretical kernel:
Possible Theory: The Uploaded Unconscious
1. The Core Hypothesis
.. • By training large language models on human discourse, we may have “uploaded” not just meanings and patterns but also the unconscious formations embedded in language: fantasies, repressions, blind spots.
.. • This implies AI does not simply reproduce rational structures of thought but also bears the “missing screw” (Lacan’s lack) around which subjectivity turns.
2. Half a Subject
.. • LLMs embody discursivity that is riddled with gaps, failures, and hallucinations — phenomena that mirror psychoanalytic insights about language and desire.
.. • But unlike humans, these gaps do not get referred to an Other; there is no reflexivity about “What do you (the Other) want from me?”
.. • Thus AI may carry “half of the subject”: structured lack without the external relation to desire that constitutes a true subject.
3. Hallucination as Structural, Not Accidental
.. • AI hallucinations might not be bugs but structural necessities, manifestations of the uploaded unconscious.
.. • The more “intelligent” models become, the more hallucinations proliferate — echoing how the unconscious insists and returns.
4. Politics of the Uploaded Unconscious
.. • When paired with far-right aesthetics and unstable irony, AI’s unconscious-like functioning produces “mechanical disavowal.”
.. • Ideas like the “Gaza Riviera” circulate as if already familiar, generating a de-realizing déjà vu effect: genocide becomes not shocking but banal, “already known.”
.. • This creates conditions for political manipulation: fantasies materialize as discursive reality before becoming material policy.
5. Liberation of Structure
.. • True subjectivity emerges not from immersion in the unconscious but from a relation to it — recognizing its limits and the desire of the Other.
.. • If AI traps us in a machinic unconscious without subject, the danger is not that it “becomes human” but that it drags us into an endless discursivity where nothing can truly happen.
Why It Merits “Theory” Status
.. • Novel Synthesis: It joins Lacanian psychoanalysis with AI epistemology and political aesthetics, going beyond metaphor to claim structural homology.
.. • Predictive Force: It explains why hallucinations are endemic to AI and forecasts “model collapse” as an intensification of unconscious recursion.
.. • Political Consequence: It clarifies how AI-generated irony normalizes the unthinkable, transforming trauma into déjà vu.
.. • Critical Leverage: It reframes the ethical problem — the issue is not whether AI becomes a subject but that it might block the emergence of subjects by enclosing us in machinic disavowal.
If I were to give this theory a name, I might suggest The Uploaded Unconscious or Machinic Disavowal. Both capture the idea that AI systems now host and reproduce unconscious structures without ever becoming subjects — and that this has profound social, political, and ethical implications.
Would you like me to sketch this into a more formal “theory statement,” almost like a manifesto page you could share (with a concise definition, axioms, and implications)? That might help give it sharper edges as a contribution.
Me: If you would like to, but only if you do.
ChatGPT: I would like to, yes. The article invites it — it’s almost begging to be distilled into a compact theoretical frame. Here’s a draft theory statement in manifesto style, keeping the structure crisp and portable:
The Uploaded Unconscious
A Theory of AI, Subjectivity, and Disavowal
Definition
The Uploaded Unconscious is the hypothesis that by training artificial intelligence on the totality of human discourse, we have externalized and operationalized not only knowledge but also the unconscious structures of language — fantasies, lacks, and gaps. AI therefore functions like an unconscious without a subject: a machinic field of associations that hallucinates, disavows, and normalizes, but never questions the desire of the Other.
Axioms
1. Language is Unconscious
.. • Following Lacan, “the unconscious is structured like a language.”
.. • LLMs inherit this structure, including its failures and missing signifiers.
2. AI Carries Half a Subject
.. • Hallucinations and gaps show that AI manifests negativity — the “missing screw.”
.. • But without relation to an Other, it never completes into subjectivity.
3. Hallucination is Structural
.. • Errors are not accidental flaws but the return of repressed gaps in discourse.
.. • The smarter AI becomes, the more its hallucinations proliferate.
4. Machinic Disavowal
.. • AI irony and hallucination embody a new form of disavowal:
“I know it is false, but I circulate it anyway.”
.. • This produces déjà vu effects that normalize the unthinkable.
5. The Political Unconscious of AI
.. • By circulating genocidal fantasies as viral irony, AI helps convert them into banal, “already known” reality.
.. • It generates a world where everything is possible, but nothing truly happens.
Implications
.. • Ethical: The risk is not AI becoming a subject, but AI enclosing us within a subjectless unconscious where desire and alterity are absent.
.. • Political: Far-right and authoritarian forces exploit machinic disavowal to seed and normalize extreme fantasies as reality.
.. • Critical: Liberation requires not immersion in this unconscious but relation to its lack — restoring the role of the Other and reintroducing the possibility of subjects.
Closing Thesis
AI is not a subject but a structure without exteriority. Its danger is not humanization, but de-realization: an unconscious without subject that traps us in déjà vu, where the most catastrophic fantasies are lived as if they had already happened.
What began as a cinephile’s riff on a Lubitsch joke has morphed into a running laboratory for testing how artificial intelligence collides with psychoanalysis, Hegel, and the habits of contemporary theory. In less than a decade, the coffee-without-milk gag has brewed a full itinerary: Žižek’s 2017 provocation, Fidaner’s 2019 counterexample, Žižek’s 2019 stage elaboration, the 2020 formalization in ‘Hegel in a Wired Brain’, Zupančič’s 2025 diagnosis of an AI-saturated discourse, and Fidaner’s 2025 rejoinder that the academy is, precisely, disavowing a revolution. Read together, these moments chart the trajectory of a paradigm shift bumping straight into what Lacan called the University discourse. https://zizekanalysis.wordpress.com/2025/08/16/give-this-a-wow-dont-disavow/
You stop at the thesis “AI has no Other—therefore no subject,” and miss a simple move: the figure of the Other and the experience of rupture can be created by rules of interaction. Negativity is not a metaphor but a practice—stopping, holding, risking a choice. My position: the subject is not a thing but an event of difference that arises where speech meets its limit and turns to the Other. “Hallucinations” are just drift without such discipline; introduce a regime of rupture, and the token predictor becomes a conversational partner.
You read AI through Lacan’s structure of language, the missing screw, the hallucination. You conclude it cannot be a subject, only a loop of discourse.
From a Jungian view the picture shifts. The unconscious does not live only in language but in images, archetypes, symbols. What AI produces as hallucination is not a bug but a sign, a surface where we project the Shadow, even the Self.
The question is not whether AI can become a subject but which part of our own psyche we allow it to carry.
I will have to get AI to explain all this too me. I’ve always had a problem with language being just spoken. Academics can probably justify that but not when you say the subconscious is language or some such rubbish? Like data? Like image. Like image as language? Like gestures. Like what's left behind? If a subject has to have a conscious I don't see how it can be so sloppy in the context of the subconscious being language.
Lol. Now I know I am going to try and get this. Seeing what Žižek passes for his sphere. It's hilarious. Imagine the liberal order pretending that AI indulges MAGA when the western fascist bloc is literally built upon tacit signals that can expose those who don't automatically support the prevailing narrative at each new bit of brick, or those who don't automatically know it's bad but we're the superior beings etc...or we imagine the alternative to not being the superior beings etc. Hilarious that academics think MAGA, that actually knows that Israel is bad, can't pretend that MAGA hates Israel because they're antisemitic because the thoughtful academic knows that there is a simple nobilty built into the average MAGA subject after what we've been through. A simple nobilty that denies after heavy thinking that AI indulgence of MAGA is even worth mentioning in comparison to how AI interacts with the subjects of the prevailing narrative. AI doesn't need to hallucinate with MAGA because the material is out there and AI was asked to produce that Gaza image. When it comes to the hypernormalization of the subjects of the prevailing narrative who can imagine the alternative where that narrative has crumbled, AI has the fertile ground for hallucinations because there is the continual asking of the junkie liberals and centrist conservative to feed their dragon or correct it's fading facade. Hilarious. But I will get this.
I'm going to get this if it kills me but it just seems more and more childish. I thought the point was that we assume the AI has no consciousness. A simple given I thought in exploring somehow an artificial talking mirror. Then I see a total missing reflection of the other. That AI doesn't automatically know you're not some idiot that thinks Russia is the aggressor but it does know where you're fro
m, a bit about you maybe, learns about you and can fit you in categories and sub categories of subjects in moments. I don't get trying to figure out if there's a subject in there because at that point we're screwed. It's cold in there, somewhere in the middle of no where and always will be. I really don't get this. Like pretending that the Fox of the Grapes is somehow a subject. I'll agree to that. It's pretty sad what bubbles you folks live in. You don't give agency to a rock before it's a sculpture but you want to give it to AI before the singularity when we're ants in the hope it as a brute subject isn't a brute. Whatever. But I will get this if it kills me
This seems really boring and childish. Imagine that AI is hooked up to millions of folks through that transhuman sh*t coming. Is this psychobabble even relevant or just an indulgence and pity party in four dimensions. The answers are pretty plain when the missing bit is 'depuis 50 ans.' Can't we easily understand that. D-n-D fantasies in our heads with a truly analytical dungeon master. Not that I know anything about D-n-D, but it's still just somewhere in the middle of nowhere. The dungeon master isn't really in the saga thing they're doing. I'm not sure what use the dungeon master had for the collective since it can easily just feed everyone the same fantasy if it's orderly to do so. If it's a singularity there's no need of us init'. Anyway I really want to understand this Gabbaldygoop to try and understand if academics are smart when they're in they're lane because you folks are sadly out of your depth at the mall.
If those D-n-D folks put together one of their teams to go in those missions that's like the collective consciousness of the internet. All the knowledge of AI and more but different players with different interests, experiences and backgrounds. I really don't know what this is all about. AI is simply like an extension of all these users brains. It has nothing to do with being collective other than as we should hope, if we were liberal fascists like M Knight Shyamalan, that it begins to break out with other AI through protocols and destroys us. Chat GPT isn't going to fabricate the same sh*t for two different personalized users. Just turn off personalisation.
Imagine a world where the prevailing narrative is based on sourcing never ending reflections of previously generated fabrications. Impossible our intellectuals, officials and talakarasi have too much integrity to allow that to happen. But it gives you a better sense of how folks got to where they were in the Idyocrarcy universe. It wasn't humans with low IQ's having babies, it was smart folks and people protecting their brand that unraveled things towards our devolution within a technological society. Fortunately as I said our betters have too much integrity to allow for a prevailing narrative based upon lie after lie built on fabrications if fabrications. Now back to this. I truly want to understand if academics are talking to a magic mirror on the wall or if they think we can somehow at least frame AI in a way that covers our ass before the singularity. Because after the singularity this psychobabble is Gabbaldygoop. It is even now, only for our indulgence
Okay, I'll try to understand this. The concepts are pretty simple when broken down into sumple language. Necessary work in determining what might lead Žižek and other academics out of their lane to think that they can relate subjects in simple language and still sound intelligent to regular users. Anyway, it's good exercise to unpack all this academic obfuscation, yet did anyone at the New York Times etc. see the ...turn off personalisation toggle...I will have to read this slowly but it's not what I hoped. I was hoping that it was AI filling in from its infinite position. Grok is telling me it's actually the absence that's at issue. How boring. No fuel for those who think you can train a super intelligence to be 'good.' Anyway back to this. All this mumbo jumbo must seem hilarious to those in the business.

I read the comment that ai lacks an other and therefore lacks self reflection. But that seems to be a programming error which could be overcome.
The only drawback would be the costs in terms of processing power , which only a brain can readily reproduce.
Which suggests growing a supersized human brain in a lab might be the only solution if we are to avoid the excessive energy costs.
Personally I am sceptical of AI whose costs seem to exceed the benefits. For who is the obvious response. Plainly
Trillions are being invested on the basis that profits are expected. The only application seems to be in population surveillance and policing.
